Mockery is no substitute for argument

Antonia Zerbisias writes of my blog:

You know, just when I think those fetus worshippers can't get any crazier, I stumble on stuff like this.

Ridicule is only to be expected from people who are unable to intellectually defend their point of view.

They barely know the facts themselves. They can hardly admit that abortion kills a human being, i.e. a homo sapiens, let alone explain why some human beings are more equal than others.

First, they don't even pay attention to the argument being made-- that mass killing of human beings-- such as abortion-- is preceded by de-humanization that then justifies the disposal of those oppressed groups.

Second, they then lift up the person making the argument without explaining what they're really saying. Antonia is a feminist version of a Neanderthal saying "hyuck hyuck, gee isn't she stupid, bwah ha ha ha"-- ridiculing what she doesn't know and what she doesn't want to confront.

The audience is supposed to derive from that ridicule something completely different from what the original person is saying. What it amounts to is a form of deception to hang on to cultural power.

But the truth is, they don't have an argument about what is being said.

It's politically powerful, but intellectually dishonest way of proceeding. Don't listen, mock, dispose. Do not address the issue raised.

In the age when pro-lifers didn't have blogs and the internet as a medium, that was a very useful way of proceeding.

But I don't think that's going to work any more.

Because now pro-lifers have their own platforms to make their arguments.

Poor-choicers are not going to be able to run away from the arguments any more. They will have to address the issue of the status of the fetus. They will have to explain why one group of human beings must forefeit their lives at the expense of another.

In the past, this is how they shut down the abortion debate (which we never had). They said: just ignore it. It's stupid. Nothing to look at here folks.

They won't be able to do that any more. As a tactic "she's crazy" only goes so far.
