Cardinal: Forcing Catholics to reject their values is oppression of conscience

Translated from a French Zenit article. Cardinal Bertone says:

I do not understand why a person holding public office or engaged in political activity is obligated to renounce his Catholic identity because his party, either in the US or elsewhere in the world, imposes a moral choice based on the party's platform.


The article goes on to say:

The Cardinal sees in this attitude "a lack of respect of freedom of conscience" and even "an oppression of conscience"

Where is the freedom of conscience so touted and defended in America? He asked himself.
